We have always found plenty of restaurant options when visiting Big Sky, MT. As Big Sky has grown in recent years, we’ve witnessed a growing culinary scene with new restaurants opening each year alongside our familiar favorites.
If you are staying at Big Sky Resort, the closest restaurants are located in the resort’s Mountain Village. Overall, Big Sky Resort restaurants tend to be expensive, but you’re paying for their convenience, beautiful setting, and proximity.
Overall, we have generally found a wider variety of dining options and a better value just 15 minutes down the mountain in Big Sky Town Center and Meadow Village. During the winter, however, that involves navigating a potentially snowy and dark mountain road, albeit for a short distance. That usually kept us at the resort, especially when our kids were younger. You’ll have to decide if it’s worth it for you!
This guide highlights our favorite restaurant discoveries over the years, along with some exciting additions on our "to-try" list!
Restaurants- Big Sky Resort Mountain Village
If you are staying at Big Sky Resort, the closest restaurants are located in the resort’s Mountain Village. Montana Jack is located right in the center of Mountain Village and is a good spot for burgers and beers on tap. We also recommend the “grab and go” sandwiches from Hungry Moose Market in the first level of the Exchange (next to Montana Jack).
Although we’re always looking forward to trying new dining options, these are the restaurants that we have enjoyed during past visits.
Vista Hall- Big Sky Resort has recently opened a new food hall with a variety of food vendors offering sushi, ramen bowls, pizza, tacos, deli, burgers, and a bakery. You’ll find something for everyone here. Our kids like the burgers and chicken nuggets (of course!), and we thought the deli prepared some pretty good sandwiches. Stone Fired Pizza is a good take-out option that we use regularly.
Note the hours though— they close relatively early at 7pm.
Westward Social - Also new to the scene, Westward Social is conveniently located in the Exchange Building (below Vista Hall) and serves lunch and dinner. Expect small plates, salads, and entrees like burgers, salmon, and brisket. We’ve found the quality of food to be pretty good here, but it’s expensive.
Montana Jack- Casual, pub-style food with a huge draft beer selection. Go for a beer and burger. Kids menu is available as well. Convenient location in the heart of Mountain Village with a few TVs to watch the game and live music most evenings.
Chet’s Bar and Grill- Good food and very family-friendly. Located in the Huntley Lodge/Shoshone Hotel-Condos complex, so you don’t have to go outside to walk to it if staying there. If available, we always try to stay at the Shoshone Hotel-Condos and have also enjoyed shorter stays at Huntley Lodge. See our “Where to Stay in Big Sky” for all of our recommendations.
Hungry Moose Market- Located in the Exchange Building in the Mountain Village, Hungry Moose has a bit of everything you’d find in a grocery store as well as take out deli sandwiches and salads. It’s a super convenient place if you want to pick up items here to cook in your vacation rental. We’ve been pleasantly surprised by their quality meat and produce offerings. A nice freezer section as well.
Treeline Coffee Roasters- Located in Mountain Village, enjoy a cup of Joe from one of Bozeman’s beloved coffee roasters.
Big Sky Ski-In/Ski-out On Mountain Dining
Shedhorn Grill- Lunch is only served at this on mountain yurt at the base of Shedhorn Lift. Warm up by the fire or enjoy a sunny day on the deck. Their chili is pretty darn good!
Everett’s 8800 - Accessed by Ramcharger Lift (lift ticket required), this is more of a fine dining experience with a cozy atmosphere and great views. Reservations recommended especially for dinner. We haven’t dined here yet as we’re usually dining with our young kiddos, but it gets really good reviews.
Big Sky Restaurants at Madison Base
Headwaters Grill- If you’re staying at Moonlight or skiing the runs from Madison Base, Headwaters is the go to option for lunch salads, soups, and sands.
See Explore Big Sky’s Big Sky Resort Dining Guide for a nice summary of all of Big Sky Resort’s food offerings.
Restaurants In and Around Big Sky Town Center
If you want to venture down the mountain for food, these options are tasty and worth it. It’s less than a 15 minute drive from Big Sky Mountain Village and the road is generally well plowed. Turn right on Ousel Falls Rd to access Town Center and left to go to the restaurants in Meadow Village. You can also ride the free Skyline Bus Shuttle which picks up in Mountain Village. See timetables for each stop here.
Ousel and Spur Pizza Company - Yummy pizza and pasta located right next to the Skating Rink and Waypoint Theater. Dinner and movie anyone?
Blue Moon Bakery - My favorite combo of foods: gourmet pizzas, pastries, and deli sandwiches. Pizza is amazing and voted one of the best in Big Sky.
Beehive Basin Brewery - A microbrewery located right next to Roxy’s Market. Unfortunately, they don’t serve food but you’re welcome to bring your own. You could grab deli sandwiches from neighboring Roxy Market or buy a growler to go.
Pinky G’s Pizzeria- Voted best pizza in Jackson Hole, Pinky’s G’s has now opened a new location in Big Sky to serve up their New York style slices. This is a fast and affordable food option. Keep in mind that seating is somewhat limited here with just a few tables. Offers pizza by the slice as well.
Horn & Cantle- Located at Lone Mountain Ranch, Horn & Cantle may be the highest quality food found in Big Sky. Enjoy their cozy dining room or sit at the bar for a wonderful meal. Reservations recommended.
Tres Tores Tacos & Tequila - Relatively new to the Big Sky dining scene, Tres Tores serves up a good margarherita and tasty tacos. Located in the Wilson Hotel.
By Word of Mouth -Also known as “BWOM” (voted best burgers!). You’ll find a good mix of locals and tourists here. Good atmosphere. Only open Monday-Friday for lunch and dinner. Happy hour 3-6pm.
Olive B’s Big Sky Bistro- A well-reviewed casual bistro in Meadow Village where the food lives up to the hype. We have yet to dine here, but friends have loved it.
Michalangelo’s- Serving up Italian comfort food in Meadow Village. Gets great reviews. Open Wed-Sun for dinner. Reservations accepted.
Riverhouse BBQ- Located on 191, Riverhouse is the perfect outing for BBQ. Located on the banks of the Gallatin River and well-loved by locals. The fried chicken plate is the deal! Opens at 3pm.
Mi Pueblito Taco Bus- Haven’t been able to try this yet but am certainly intrigued. Located in the lot near Ace Hardware. 1567 Lone Mountain Trail.
Unique and Memorable Dining Experiences at Big Sky
If you’re looking for a unique and super memorable meal, you might be interested in the Montana Yurt Dinner Experience at Big Sky Resort. Take a 15 minute snowcat ride to a cozy, candlelit backcountry dinner yurt. It’s a 3 course meal with time afterwards for stargazing and sledding. Generally lasts about 3 hours (6:30pm- 9:30pm). Reservations required. Kids menu is also offered. Pricey! $229 per adult and $189 per child.
Another memorable meal experience that gets great reviews is the horse-drawn Sleigh Ride Dinner at Lone Mountain Ranch. Offered daily at 4:30 and 7:30pm. Imagine a cozy lit cabin with family-style dinner of prime rib with cowboy storytellers for entertainment. $220 per person and kids menu available upon request.
Grocery Stores in Big Sky Town Center
The larger full-service groceries are found in Big Sky’s Town Center. Roxy’s Market is a somewhat more expensive option but is a nice, new store. You can order online for pickup.
The other option in Town Center is the Hungry Moose Market (also has a smaller store in Mountain Village). Their produce and meat selection is good, and it seems less expensive than Roxy’s. Both groceries are good for “grab and go” fare.
Grocery Store in Big Sky Resort
Sometimes it’s just easier, especially with kids, to pick up some groceries for a simple meal at your vacation rental. One of our Shoshone rentals one year even had a crock pot!
As mentioned above, Big Sky Resort houses an even smaller satellite Hungry Moose Market, in the Exchange Building in the heart of Mountain Village within walking distance of chairlifts. They carry all the staples including meat, some produce, milk, beer, etc.
The prices are actually fairly reasonable for being so convenient and close. A good option for when you run out of something or have a hankering for a particular food or beer. They also sell various pharmaceutical items and hand and toe warmers if you run out or didn’t bring any.
Hope our guide helps you find just the right place to dine when visiting Big Sky Resort! Happy Trails!
